I am writing today in support of the more than 21,000 registered nurses and nurse practitioners at 21 Kaiser Permanente facilities going on strike to protest the administration’s refusal to address their ongoing concerns about workplace health and safety and chronic short staffing.

Nurses want to give patients the best care, but Kaiser refuses to provide the necessary resources for them to do their jobs safely. Chronic short-staffing means patients are waiting longer for care and nurses are forced to skip legally-provided meal and rest breaks, risking patient and nurse safety. This is unacceptable and unconscionable when Kaiser made more than $14 billion during the first two years of the pandemic.

I join RNs and NPs in demanding that Kaiser management invest in nursing staff and agree to a contract that provides:

- Minimum staffing guidelines that ensure safe patient care.
      - Increased hiring and training to end chronic short staffing.
      - Job protections against Kaiser’s subcontracting and outsourcing plans

Throughout the pandemic, Kaiser has degraded working conditions and standards, putting nurse and patient safety at risk. Kaiser must put patients and health care workers before profits!

Throughout the pandemic, Kaiser has degraded working conditions, but nurses are patient advocates; when we see our hospital putting us or our patients at risk, we must stand up and speak out.

Kaiser RNs and NPs in Northern California have been in negotiations for a new contract since June 2022 with little to no movement on key issues. Meanwhile, Kaiser continues raking in record profits.
