Tell Desert Regional Medical Center Board of Directors: No Tenet sale without additional oversight!

I am writing to you today because I am deeply concerned about the persistent patient safety problems at Desert Regional Medical Center (DRMC) in Palm Springs, CA during Tenet Healthcare’s lease.

Across our hospital, Tenet’s profits-before-patients approach has caused recently serious patient safety concerns including:
 
1.            Inadequate staffing,
2.            Broken equipment,
3.            Sewage leaks in rooms, and
4.            Rats!
 
Staffing and equipment continue to be problems. I am calling on Tenet to address these persistent problems before we entrust our community’s future well-being to it.

I am also joining the call of nurses at DRMC demanding that any decision by the District Board on renewing the lease or potential sale of the hospital include additional oversight and conditions on Tenet Healthcare, which is a billion-dollar for-profit health care corporation.

As you know, Tenet has proposed an extension of its current lease with an option to buy at the end of the lease term. This new lease agreement would begin in 2027, when the current lease ends. Yet it appears Tenet is trying to rush through a deal, as the current proposal demands that the district board take action swiftly in order to receive an initial payment of $75 million if the deal is signed in 2024.

Our community deserves a say in the future of our hospital. I join DRMC nurses in demanding Tenet address these urgent patient safety issues and that no sale take place without additional oversight.
