Tell MedStar: Stop Cutting Maternal Health
MedStar Health just closed an entire postpartum unit at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, cutting over one-third of postpartum beds in D.C.’s busiest maternity hospital. This decision puts mothers and babies at risk, especially communities of color and low-income families who already suffer from health disparities. This is part of a long history of attacks on maternal healthcare in the District. Nurses and the community are coming together to demand MedStar reopen the unit immediately and put patient safety ahead of profits.
Registered nurses at MedStar Washington Hospital Center are demanding that management reinstate the recently closed postpartum unit and take proactive steps to improve the health and safety of our patients.
This closure is a dangerous mistake:
- Black women account for 90% of pregnancy-related deaths in D.C., despite making up only half the population.
- Cutting beds directly hurts low-income families and communities of color who already face the highest risks during childbirth.
- Residents of wards 7 and 8 already lack options for obstetric care. Washington Hospital Center is a trusted option.
- MedStar is choosing cost cuts over basic safety for D.C.'s most vulnerable families.
