Dear LCMC CEO Greg Feirn,

I am a New Orleans community member outraged to hear that Nurse Practitioner and Bargaining Team member Lauren Waddell is being denied the opportunity to advance her practice by acquiring her Doctorate of Nursing Practice in Neurology. Ms. Waddell’s request to continue working at UMC while achieving her Doctorate should be encouraged as it would further improve the care provided to my friends, family and neighbors.

UMC management must work with Ms. Waddell as they have with other employees to accommodate her desire to advance her practice and continue to enhance the care available to UMC patients like myself. Retaliating against employees by not providing equal opportunity for advancement is discriminatory, is counter to the values espoused by UMC and violates federal law. We demand that UMC management do the right thing and cease this retaliatory behavior. If UMC continues to retaliate and discriminate against nurse leaders, our community is ready to escalate.

UMC management is retaliating against the nurses' elected Negotiating Team member, Nurse Practitioner Lauren Waddell. She has repeatedly asked for a reduction in hours to pursue her Doctor of Nursing Practice in Neurology so she can better serve the needs of our community. Reducing hours is a common practice granted to nurses for various reasons. Ms. Waddell has done everything required to ensure her patients will not be affected, but management has continued to deny her the opportunity to advance her practice.
